- At the 34thAnnual MANRRS National Conference in Kansas, Carmen Banks (Hovey Lab) won 2nd place in the graduate oral research competition for her work, “Prolactin receptors in the kidney: What regulates their expression in pigs?” and 1st place in the elevator speech competition about the importance of MAN-RRS. Juliana Candelaria (Denicol Lab) won 1st place in the graduate research poster competition for her work, “Follicle-stimulating hormone receptor is expressed in bovine preantral follicles from primary to late secondary stage of development”. Guadalupe Peña (King Lab) presented her research on “Feeding Broccoli Stems and Leaves Meal to Enhance Egg Quality”, while Shannon Chee, an undergraduate in computer science who is helping to develop a major in cyber security, presented a MANRRSX talk to industry representatives, graduate, and undergraduate members at the conference lunch.
- . The 2019 annual conference of the Society for the Study of Reproduction will be in San Jose, CA July 18-21. This meeting covers multiple aspects of reproductive and developmental biology including stem cells, epigenetics and gene editing. Late breaking abstracts are due April 15. OUTREACH & TRAVEL
- Alison Van Eenennaam spoke on “Genetics, genomics and transgenesis: Impact in Animal and food production” at the “How biotechnology can vanish world hunger Workshop” in Pirassununga, Brazil.
- Aviva Fiske and Andrea Schreier traveled to Bonners Ferry, Idaho to update the interagency Kootenai River white sturgeon co-managers group on sturgeon spontaneous autopolyploidy research and to discuss a new upcoming project to develop parentage based tagging for their conservation aquaculture program.
- Abbas Ahmadi gave a presentation on the model software for the upcoming NRC Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle, 8th Edition, at the National Research Council meeting, held at the National Academies of Sciences, Washington DC.
- Matthias Hess attended the Annual Meeting of the Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute where he was invited to the Director's Reception and presented his work on "the role of fungi in anaerobic fermentation of plant biomass using a whole-systems approach".
- The Animal Science Center for Animal Welfare hosted animal welfare scientists from CSIRO, Armidale for a 2-day workshop. The two teams met to identify areas for future collaboration, as part of the initiative to build relationships between our two institutions. The CSIRO team included Dr. Caroline Lee, Dr. Dana Campbell and PhD student Jessica Monk.
